Every once and awhile we like to remind our clients they can make a backup of their site. Things happen and it is a good idea to have a backup of any work you have done in several areas. Jen and I do it with our originals to plan for those unforeseen events, such as a computer being stolen which has happened to Jen. That was very scary!
Here are the instructions for creating a backup:
- Login to your FTP
- Select all of the files in the “public_html” folder
- Drag them into a folder in your local drives and this will create a copy of all of the site files on your hard drive.
- Next log into your cPanel and select the PHPMyAdmin icon. This will show you the database.
- Click on the database with your username and template name on the left hand side of the window.
- Then choose the “Export” tab.
- Make sure that under the Export category all entries are selected, from Calendar to Watermark.
- Check “Save as File”, make sure to select the file format SQL, and click “Go” in the bottom right hand corner.
- This will create a copy of your database in which you can save to the same folder you have your site files.
- Now you have a complete copy of your site and if you would like you can save it to an external hard drive or burn it to CD.
Keep in mind, that the images on your site have been resized to fit screen resolution. We have had several clients have hard drives crash and come to us hoping we have the full resolution images because they were uploaded to the sites. The images are optimized for a website and are not printable. Any images you wish to backup should be done separately.
